A limited edition of 500 numbered copies, all with Karl Malmvall's signature. In September, we will let an everyday object, shaped into a sculpture, meet Yves Klein's iconic color. Step Stepladder in Klein Blue is a small, conscious nod to the man who once tried to sign the sky. The steps can be purchased exclusively from us and Design House Stockholm.

In 1960, after a decade of searching, Yves Klein found his blue color in a single moment, the exact mixture that gave International Klein Blue its depth. Karl Malmvall found his ladder in the same way, not sketched, not planned, but discovered in a brief moment.

Every home needs a stepladder to reach the top shelf or hang a picture, and in most homes it is hidden away in the deepest part of a closet. Malmvall's insight was simple: a ladder that doesn't need to be hidden. Hung on the wall like a work of art or standing on the floor like a sculpture, waiting and present instead of tucked away.

That's how a really good idea works, in design, art and music. It never really comes out of nowhere, it just seems that way. Years of experience and knowledge accumulate unnoticed until everything suddenly falls into place in that moment of clarity.

"Step is more than just function. It has to be beautiful enough to hang on the wall instead of being hidden away in a closet." – Karl Malmvall

The Step Stepladder was first launched in 2007. Since then, it has won the Wallpaper Design Award and the ELLE Decoration Swedish Design Award (Furniture of the Year, 2011) and was named Wired Editors' Pick 2013.
