Duralex drinking glasses were created in 1946 by the French company Saint-Gobain. The company had been manufacturing glass windows since 1665 (its very first commission was to make windows for the enormous Palace of Versailles outside Paris). During the transition from craftsmanship to industrial production, they developed increasingly stronger glass qualities, and in the 1940s, drinking glasses were needed that matched their tempered glass tabletops.

The rest is industrial history. The glasses have been produced in many different sizes, but the typical ones share the "MADE IN FRANCE" marking with a surrounding circular design and the name "DURALEX" at the bottom. According to Agence France-Presse, the glasses are "considered icons of modern design" and are sold at the Museum of Modern Art.
